Agriculture

Sunitsch Canyon is a side canyon with a small stream flowing into Chumstick Creek.  Most of the 40 arable acres are oriented north-south, gently sloping southward.  Approximately 1 acre is used for mixed vegetable production, the rest for alfalfa/grass hay and grains.

Sunitsch Canyon was originally homesteaded in 1888. The homestead farm was registered as Tyrolese Farms in the 1930’s when it was producing the first seed potatoes in the Wenatchee valley and operating the largest Holstein dairy heard outside of Carnation. The homestead barn, which still stands, was built before 1912.

One major objective is to maintain viable agricultural land in our local community. While not presently certified, all operations are organic. Weed control has largely been accomplished through an active regime of cover crop rotation. This is particularly noted on the dry land hillside work managed by Grant Gibbs.

The fields typically have 2 cuttings from the alfalfa hay, baled and sold locally. The Organic Garden focuses on hardy and stable staples like dried beans, potatoes, cabbage, onions, garlic and a historic rhubarb patch
